Laken Linnea Sylvander is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, curator and researcher whose work spans the environmental and digital humanities. Her focuses lie in land & textile futures under the climate crisis, and decolonial practices in formal and informal art spaces. She studied Critical Studies in Art & Culture as an MA Fulbright Scholar to Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. She is currently lead researcher on an upcoming feature documentary by Chiara Clemente about Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo, as well as a fundraiser in the food justice movement in Missouri.
She is a co-founder of climatefutures.art, where she curated a youth-produced climate storytelling anthology, Climate Storytelling 2075 , on view at the Queens Council on the Arts in New York City in collaboration with Ofrenda Fest as of September 2024.
As independent artist Laken van der Syl, she has composed scores for independent choreographers and online fashion campaigns. She has been honored with her Fulbright fellowship, as well as being awarded a pass to the 2020 and 2022 Cannes Film Festivals for her essays regarding the future of cinema scoring. She has released two albums and one e.p. alongside her self-directed visuals to accompany her sonic works.
